Software Engineering
We build software, systems and other infrastructure. Pretty straightforward – except that we’re managing enormous data sets and creating platforms to juggle thousands of different simulations, reliably, without much oversight. It’s all about helping the modelers, traders and other teams do better work, faster. We cover many areas, and our team members have the varied skills to match; they move among domain-specific languages, distributed computing, cloud, data center, storage and more.
Portfolio Management
Our job is to protect our investors from risk and give them the best possible returns. To do that, we create tools that help us measure and track all the moving parts of Two Sigma’s portfolio, constantly seeking the ideal calibration of investments. We work with the modeling and optimization teams, always looking to improve our methods. We also create dashboards that help our researchers see economic warning signs more clearly. We want to navigate the markets proactively, not reactively.
Data Science & Analysis
Data Science is behind everything we do. Everything. Of course, Two Sigma collects and analyzes data to create investment insights. But we also take that approach to improve our internal processes. We use rigorous statistical principles to look at everything from HR and recruitment to facilities management. Our work takes many forms, from predictive models and experiments to data visualizations that help communicate results. But it’s always about making Two Sigma better at what we do.
Quantitative Research & Modeling
We gather data from all over the world, look for patterns, then use the insights to predict the movement of financial markets. We’re always looking for data from the markets themselves, outside indicators of the health of economies, public sentiment – think newspaper editorials and Twitter feeds – and countless other “tea leaves”. It’s high-speed, real-time puzzle solving. There’s nothing cooler than creating a model, coming in the next day, and realizing that you’ve predicted the future.
Product Management
Product managers are a bit like Swiss Army Knives. From designing what Two Sigma offers and how we sell it, to thinking about features and development roadmaps, we do a little of everything. And we work across different teams – engineering, modeling and corporate – representing our investors’ perspective. We’re always trying to foster collaboration and innovation, so the company can build products and systems better and faster. We want to raise the bar of what technology can accomplish.
Execution & Trading
Two Sigma generates a lot of good investment ideas, but we won’t deliver alpha if the cost of our trading is prohibitively high. So we build advanced trading systems that monitor financial markets and buy or sell wherever and whenever opportunities arise—as quietly as possible. This lowers the trading costs of our funds. We’ve had some real successes with our algorithms in a number of key markets, and we are constantly researching new ways to trade better globally across various asset classes.
Systems Engineering
We build data centers, networks and other computing hardware. Two Sigma has an insatiable hunger for data and processing power, and it’s our job to stay ahead of that demand. So we work to increase our cloud and storage capacity. And we collaborate with the software engineers to decide what kind of hardware best supports our business’s growing and evolving needs. Then we set it all up and make sure it’s running smoothly and efficiently.
Security
Think of Two Sigma as a body. If raw compute power is its muscles, and models and trading systems are its brain, then we’re its immune system: an integral part of doing everything it does, safely. We apply decades of experience, real technical acumen, and a heavy dose of common sense to design, review, and build the right software and systems to keep Two Sigma safe in a constantly evolving world of threats.
Reliability Engineering
As a member of this versatile group of full stack engineers, you will be on the front line for maintaining and expanding the capabilities of Two Sigma’s many and varied systems. The team exists in the space between traditional systems administration and development, and seeks to merge the capabilities from both disciplines.
